My Students
Many of my students are struggling in literacy in their regular classrooms, but love coming to PE. As a building-wide goal to increase literacy, I have found an awesome program that would allow students to read while they pedal on a recumbent stationary bike.
Pioneer Ridge Middle School is a 7-8 grade building, located in the Kansas City Metro area.
We are a high poverty school, with more than 50% of our students on free or reduced lunch. In an urban/suburban setting, exposing students to as many activities as possible will only increase the achievement of our kids.
My Project
We have a large diverse group of students who enjoy coming to school. Yet many of our students struggle with their literacy. Adding literacy into our physical education classes is a challenge. But after researching the READ & RIDE program, I believe that this would have a huge impact on our students. We teach many lifetime and competitive sports in Physical Education, but this would help those kids who are not into the competitive or lifetime sports. And help all the kids in my school with literacy.
My students would be able to read their book and work to get themselves closer to their fitness goals and increase their literacy.
A healthy student makes better grades, has better attendance and increases overall achievement.
