Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are 9th graders in a predominately Black and Hispanic school. They have spent the school year reading and responding to literature and informational texts that represent a variety of different identities to learn about the world around them and build empathy for everyone's stories. For our final unit, we will be focusing on Hispanic Immigration and the stories of those who pack up their lives in search of something more. Many of my students' families, and even themselves, have experienced migrating from one country to another.
Every year, we read excerpts from Esmeralda Santiago's memoir, When I Was Puerto Rican, in which Santiago beautifully depicts her journey from Puerto Rico to New York City in the 1960s.
Every year, students are enthralled in Santiago's journey and beg me to provide the entire memoir so that they can immerse themselves in her whole experience. Every year, I disappoint so many of my students by telling them I cannot allow them to finish Santiago's journey.
If you help me buy 25 class copies of When I Was Puerto Rican, you will be funding so many 9th grade students' journey as they learn about themselves and their identity through reading the stories of others before them.
