Ms. Alston from Charlotte NC is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need 15 copies of both "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" and "Skin I'm In", as well as an audio copy of "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings".

I teach 9th grade English and Literacy. Most of my students have not passed the state required reading competency level that qualifies them for a diploma. Their levels of reading are I and II. In order to get them to practice their reading of a nonrequired assignment, I have them read books they have chosen for outside the classroom reading. The titles I have listed are the frequently read and often not returned books that my students love to read. Funding has run out to purchase more books and even the used book stores do not have reduced-price copies of these books. My students read more when the text has relevancy or relates to them personally.
If I don't spend my own money to buy more books, we will not be able to enjoy the necessity of literacy through the reading of books the children enjoy. Funding is no longer an option from the local educational funds, nor are they available from the state funds. I would love to buy the books myself (usually from a vendor having a sale or from a used bookstore). However, even tutorial programs that once paid teachers to mentor students and receive extended pay, have been cut. Now, I too, cannot afford to spend money on what I deem to be a very important aspect of learning.
Many students would be able to read their favorite book without having to wait until someone else completes the reading. With a class set, every student would have a copy of the book to read at their rate of reading and comprehension. No more sharing a book or alternating the reading days. A student would be able to read without interruption because they have a book to read everyday.
With your help, students will be able to enjoy the books they like and maybe begin to appreciate the joy of reading. They won't have to be forced to read anymore, because they will be able to read a book of their own choosing.
