My students need practice with building their reading skills and using techniques that will increase comprehension. They love to read, but don't always comprehend as well as they could. I need some teacher resources and some classroom novels for them to use for practice.
My students are northern Illinois sixth graders who attend public school.
They are from an area of moderate poverty. Just like any school, the range of ability in the classroom is a challenge, especially in reading. My students love new books and interesting projects. They get excited about reading in partners or groups and having a fun activity to practice their skills.
My Project
I am requesting teacher resources with ideas for Reading Comprehension activities and projects to help implement the Common Core Standards for literacy. I am also requesting 2 copies of each of the Rebecca Caudill award nominees for 2014. This will give students access to reading new and exciting books of many different genres. Students have an incentive to read as many of the books from this list as they can and to vote on the winner for 2014.
With the teacher resources, we will use the students' independent reading novels (and stories from our textbook or these resources) to practice reading skills and techniques needed to improve reading comprehension and raise reading test scores.
Students will learn to back up any statements or predictions they make with evidence from stories or nonfiction passages. They will work on expanding their vocabulary using context clues. Students will continue their love for reading by experiencing many different genres of stories.
My students will be very excited to come into a classroom rich with materials for them to use.
They will be allowed to have choice in what they read in their Literature class, and use a variety of genres to practice the reading skills necessary to improve. They will be able to see their progress in their Readers Workshop Notebook that we will use throughout the year.
