My Students

My students are an amazing group! They love to learn and want nothing more than to become better readers! They come into my classroom each day ready to expand their minds despite any adversities. In truth, these students inspire me every day to be a better teacher, and I credit my growth to them.

My students confide in me that they are "giving up" because they struggle immensely fitting in, and want so much to feel comfortable at school.

Many of my students are new-comers, coming in from different parts of the world and are just learning the English language.

Our school is deep in the heart of Central Texas. With the majority of our students coming from economically disadvantaged households. Nonetheless, despite any adversity, our students come into school willing and ready to learn. They are truly an incredible and inspirational group, and I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of their lives and education.

My Project

Help me fund a culturally diverse library for my culturally diverse classroom. Imagine being a child and moving to an entirely new country and an entirely new culture. Not only are you expected to learn an entirely new language, but you are expected to read the literature provided for you while doing so. It's no secret that the key to becoming a successful reader is to read. But what if the literature is non-relatable?

Well, the solution just may be to find books that are created by culturally relatable authors and contain culturally relatable experiences within them.

In my classroom, I try to incorporate rich text full of beautiful stories and relatable situations. With these books, the students will have such literature at their fingertips as I will use them throughout lessons and keep them available for book clubs or individual use.
