Approximately half of the students in my school are performing below grade-level in reading. In order to increase reading levels and proficiency my students need to be exposed to a variety of genres on their reading levels.
Many of my students qualify for free and reduced lunch because their families live below the poverty line.
Our school encompasses a wide variety of racial and cultural backgrounds. We are an ESL (English as a Second Language) based school and we have students coming in from a wide variety of countries. Unfortunately, many of my students do not have books at home so I must provide engaging resources in my classroom. Because many of these children have limited funds for materials and field trips, books can help us "go", explore and learn together.
My Project
The elementary years are crucial in a child's development, especially reading. If students do not develop the foundational skills it can impact academic success at all levels of school. Studies have shown, that students who do not have basic reading skills by the end of third grade are at a much greater risk to fall behind in school. This is why it is so important that students have access to a variety of texts that can meet their individual needs. This project will allow me to further expand necessary reading resources and purchase books that will interest my students and instill a love of reading! The books I have chosen include fiction novels, non-fiction, science, animal books and poetry.
