My project needs quarterly reading incentive items such and pencils, bookmarks, and posters to encourage ALL second graders to read, read, READ!
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. P.'s classroom raised $188
This project is fully funded
Students at Southwest Elementary School are fortunate to have various computer programs available that complement the curriculum. Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 participate in the computerized "Accelerated Reader" program as a part of their reading grade. Goals are set for each grade level and students who reach these goals are rewarded with prizes.
Second grade teachers want to support this AR program and generate enthusiasm for our future 3-5 students, but we recognize:
1) most 7-year-olds are not ready for the stress of competition, and
2) reading levels vary greatly in second grade, thus grade level "goals" are unfair!
We teachers want to encourage ALL 176 second grade students to read, read, READ! By giving all students in all classes quarterly incentives, we hope to generate excitement for future participation in AR.
At the end of each of the first three quarters, students will receive reading incentives of AR pencils, bookmarks, and bookplates. As students use these items throughout the year, we hope they will continue to think about reading as an enjoyable alternative for free time!
At the end of the last quarter, students will receive a book to take home and read over the summer (This book will be purchased with "Bonus points" from teachers' accounts in Scholastic Book Club.) After students read this AR book, they will come back to school -- ready to take a computerized test that will kick off their AR competition!
