Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are a very diverse group. They come from different backgrounds and beliefs. Some kids have access to technology and some don't have it at home. With the rise in the knowledge of technology for current jobs, all students need to know how to be tech-savvy. Our school has a diverse population with 95% of students on free and reduced-price lunch. Many face challenges in and out of school and in their homes. School is a place of refuge for some, and I want to provide ample opportunities for them to shine where they are in their development. As their teacher, I see a group of wonderful children full of energy and a willingness to jump in and try new things.
With Arizona being 49th in state funding, it is very difficult to give all students what they need.
In order for our students to compete in the job market, they must be exposed to and be able to solve problems.
My Project
My students are in need of stories that help explain situations in a kid-friendly way. Students are learning to cope with their emotions through our Social Emotional Learning program and these books would enhance their learning. We are currently using a program called Zones so that we all have a common language to express how we are feeling throughout the day. Kids are put in a lot of stressful situations beyond the school's control and these books will help explain ways to handle those stresses. Students are learning how to become their own person and the rules that come along with it. They don't always like the rules because they think it should go their way. These books help them think beyond themselves and help them to realize a much bigger picture than themselves.
