My Students
Do you remember the excitement you felt when really loved a book series? My students are super excited about Elephant and Piggie, Pigeon, and Froggy books--these memorable characters captivate my students and they can relate to their feelings, words, and mishaps. Keep the reading motivation alive!
Our urban school is in a high poverty area and serves many low-income families and students who are English language learners.
The majority of my students come from low, socio-economic backgrounds and 85% of them qualify for free/reduced price school lunch. My energetic, diverse class of kindergarteners represent a plethora of cultures and linguistic backgrounds. My students are: Latino, Arabic, Chinese, Burmese, Vietnamese, Filipino, Samoan, Indian, African American, Japanese/Caucasian, and Greek/African American.
My Project
We would like books to promote strong character development sharing our feelings and problem solving. These will serve as life-long lessons and provide visuals as well as opportunities for in-depth group discussions. My students absolutely love the Elephant and Piggie Series, Pigeon Series, and Froggy Series books. These lively characters and their life's moments draw my students to reflect on their own feelings, choices, and friendship development process.
The One, Zero, Ish, The Dot, The Northstar series books will serve as mentor texts to help students learn and understand respect, kindness, creativity, and using their imagination to the fullest.
The series books and mentor texts will give my students a plethora of life's moments and help them reflect on their own lives.
It will help them understand character development and feelings and give them a platform for sharing their own feelings with our class community. It will give them motivation to read and learn words too! Reading is so important for all students and it's such a special journey to be able to read and choose books for my students they love and ask me to "read it again!"
