Read Me A Story!

My students need eight wireless headphones with a monitor and a CD player with bluetooth capability for our listening center.

My Students

Do you remember the first time someone read a story to you? Many of my students have not experienced the pure joy of listening to someone read a story for the pure fun of it.

Many of my students don't know where their next meal is coming from and whether they will have electricity or running water when they return home.

School is a safe place for them but learning is hard. Many of my students are significantly below grade level in reading. Part of this is caused by a lack of exposure to proper grammar, vocabulary, and appropriate literature. They get excited about the small victories in a school day: recognizing a vocabulary word from the week before or figuring out how to reduce a fraction.

My Project

I am requesting materials for a listening center in my classroom. These materials include a CD player where the students can't be tempted to switch to a radio station instead of listening to the book that challenges them. They also include a library of books on CD at a variety of reading levels. These books on CD will model proper reading fluency and expression to my students and allow them to practice comprehension skills at a higher reading level then they can read independently. These books will also expose my students to a variety of books that are popular with children so my students will start to think of reading as something that is fun and not just something that is really hard. These materials will aid my students in becoming more proficient readers.

Many of my students are reading significantly below grade level and need to make a lot of growth this year in order to be successful in middle school.

Being a confident reader will help my students increase academic achievement in all subject areas, not just reading. I also think these materials will help my students start to read for fun, and not just because it is required of them at school.
