I am a second year teacher at a Title I school in Albuquerque, New Mexico. One hundred percent of the students at my school receive free breakfast and lunch. The community surrounding my school is extremely transient which can leave gaps in a student's education. My class is full of students who are eager to learn and challenge themselves. My students are creative, passionate, caring, and intelligent. I have seen the potential my students have, and I want to give them every opportunity to reach it!
My classroom is filled with students from all different backgrounds. This diversity makes our room a wonderful, welcoming community for anyone who walks in our door. We love to read and regularly do novel studies. These novel studies allow us to deeply analyze, discuss, and learn from the books we use. My students have expressed a need for books that feature characters who are similar to them. These books are high interest, feature characters from a variety of cultures and backgrounds, and cover different genres. My students need representation in the literature they are reading, and these books will give it to them.
