My students need access to high-interest books. Graphic novels, the first book in a new series to read or a new author, can be a lifeline for struggling readers.
My 6th-grade students are inquisitive, thoughtful and full of questions. They arrive at our Middle School in their first year out of elementary school. The experience can be overwhelming. My school works hard to create a welcoming environment for our diverse population.
Among my students, there are 10 or more native dialects spoken.
This global population comes from a variety of countries and cultures.
My students in Oregon are a part of a newly adopted reading and writing workshop. This program gives students the opportunity to read literature that represents and honors the richness of the culture in my class. Students love seeing books with stories about places, customs, problems that celebrate and reflect them. They beam with joy when I am able to provide them with new books. It is most rewarding when I see my students sharing book suggestions and using stories as a medium to start conversations with each other. Or as the basis to discuss different countries and cultures.
My Project
In order for students to grow as readers and claim rock star status, they not only need access to amazing books they need a space that is inviting. Lamps will provide lighting and a general calming effect for students to settle into their books. When the lights are dimmed it gives students permission to escape, a path to reading.
Books that engage struggling readers are so important.
Struggling readers will often pick up a comic book because the pictures and visuals are less intimidating than a typical book. Specifically, graphic novels, wordless books and first in series books are excellent ways to help a struggling reader to find success. With these resources funded by generous donors, every student can read like a rock star.
