My Students

My 24 beautiful District of Columbia students come from diverse backgrounds. They are eager to learn and love a challenge. Unfortunately, most of them lack the background knowledge to make connections to the text. If we are reading a text that makes reference to a zoo and most of them have not experienced the zoo, they do not have a point of reference. We would like to build our students' background knowledge by gaining access to high-quality magazines like Scholastic News.

My Project

Students who are generally reluctant readers naturally gravitate to nonfiction text with awesome illustrations! I'm looking to ignite the curiosity of my fourth graders with subscriptions to Scholastic News magazine. These are students who generally enter fourth grade reading below grade level. Research has proven if we can catch them up by fourth grade, we are putting them on the track to success. Please consider donating. Your donation will make a huge difference in the life of a student, what better way to help our future leaders/readers. I believe students become what they see. If they see it...they can dream it...they can become it!!
