Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My diverse classroom is composed primarily of English Language Learners in a high poverty area. My students come from different academic, linguistic, and sociocultural backgrounds. They are eager learners who need time, understanding, and a friendly environment that gives them the security and opportunity to discover themselves and their world.

For most of my students, the classroom is the only print-rich environment they know.

Our school does not have a library, so it is in the classroom that students have the opportunity to read and listen to stories, to learn about their world and to discover how much they can do for the future.

My Project

I would like to create in my classroom a library where my students could escape from their world to read. I want them to read for pleasure, information, instruction, research, connecting to others, and so on. Since we do not have a library in our school, my students need to find the importance and the enjoyment of reading inside the classroom.

We need bookshelves, book bins, a reading carpet, and, of course, books!

Research suggests that reading for enjoyment tends to decrease with age, and children from lower socioeconomic groups do it less than children from higher socioeconomic groups. I want my students to experience reading as a fun get away instead of a duty or tedious task. When students read for pleasure, they acquire involuntarily most of the skills they need in the elementary school years. Through reading, children have the freedom to visit the world they want, to meet the characters they like, and to face the challenges they wish.

Most of the times, students have no idea of how much learning they are gaining while reading for enjoyment because it does not require too much effort and it happens naturally. The ability to read competently and, more importantly, the pleasure of reading has implications for students' academic success. It is also an important indicator of success in other areas of life such as: health, positive communication and friendships, better social skills, and higher levels of motivation towards school. Reading leads to learning and it is through learning that students can empower themselves and change the world into a better happy place.
