Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My diverse classroom is composed primarily of English Language Learners in a high poverty area. My students come from different academic, linguistic, and socio-cultural backgrounds. They are eager learners who need time, understanding, and a friendly environment that gives them the security and opportunity to discover themselves and their world.

Most of my students start 2nd grade without reading or writing.

Our school does not have a library, so it is in the classroom that students have the opportunity to read and listen to stories, to learn about their world, and to discover how much they can do for the future.

My Project

My students need books that teach them about social justice, diversity and character. Social justice books for children develop empathy and build shared background knowledge around topics like refugee and immigrant experiences, racism, bias, poverty, and hunger.

I want my students to believe they can change the world through thoughtful and peaceful action.

Great books can inspire kids to become activists and fight for a kinder and better world.

The best thing about books is that they can take readers anywhere. Books offer us a perspective and experience that we may otherwise never know, and that glimpse into someone else’s story can be integral in creating open and accepting minds and hearts. Please help me to teach my children how to become better citizens.
