This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The students I teach need exposure to reading novels to help build their reading stamina. The media center on our campus is old and outdated, and does not truly promote the desire to read for my 7th graders. Many of their families look at buying books as a luxury.

My students are hungry for literature that interest thems; I captured their attention with the first novel I purchased, and now they're ready to eat up another.

However, funds are tight, and high-interest novels are not necessarily the top priority in my district, when so many basic necessities are more important.

Reading helps children learn to make sense not only of the world around them but also people, building social-emotional skills and of course, imagination. The imagination of some of my students might be the only way they experience a world other than the one in their immediate neighborhood.
