My Students

"Read it again, Teacher!!" That's what my kindergarten students say when I introduce another great story to them. Many come to kindergarten with very limited exposure to good books, and they love to listen to the stories I read to them.

I teach a kindergarten class of 20 children in rural North Carolina.

We are a small Title I school with about 90% of the children on free/reduced lunch. They are eager to learn, and I read as many stories as I can, but I need to spend a large amount of time working with small intervention groups for the little ones who are having trouble mastering the basic skills. The rest of the children must work independently on literacy activities during this time.

My Project

A set of sturdy, portable CD players will allow the children to take turns listening to the books they are not able to read yet. They will be excited to have an opportunity to choose stories and songs to hear while their teacher is working with other students.

Listening to reading is a great way to inspire and expand the imaginations of young children.

It also reinforces essential skills, builds vocabulary, and helps develop listening skills. We believe that we are building life-long learners, and this project will allow the children to listen and learn independently from stories of their own choosing.
