Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The materials in this project will allow over five hundred amazing students who strive for excellence in grades pre-k through fourth grade to create and work on STEM-based projects related to picture and chapter books during their first semester...in the library! This project covers enough materials for each grade level to experience at least three STEM projects after reading a book related to their curriculum (and some seasonal STEM fun as well). All STEM projects are connected to books we have in our school library and extend on what students are learning in their classrooms.
These STEM projects will show students that once a book is closed, the curiosity and exploration does not have to stop.
This makes the literacy and library visits more meaningful, engaging, and connected to real-world application. For example, one of the kinder STEM projects of creating a flying machine is related to their ELAR unit on fiction and non-fiction and the science unit of engineering.
The goal of this project is for students to see how reading can lead to so many things such as growing curiosity, exploring different possibilities, making connections to the world, and even fostering empathy and self-love. Our students persevere through challenges and want to do big, new things, and STEM is one way for students to be able to practice that....and in the end learn something new academically, about the world, or even about themselves.
