My Students
We have a dynamic community of students and families. There is an ongoing influx of refugees coming into this low-income community every year from refugee camps in Africa, Asia and East Europe with no prior formal education. The K-8 charter is a little over 15 years old and was created by parents, most of whom were refugees from war-torn Somalia. These concerned parents wanted to provide a safe and welcoming learning environment where their children could thrive and their culture elevated.
My Project
My students helped me compile a list of books, games and projects that they are interested in. These materials will help me to continue to motivate my students to read, create and play in our co-created and collaborative learning space.
My students are crazy about book sets.
I had just purchased the series of Diary of a Wimpy Kid and now my students can't put the books down. They're making comparisons, discussing the text with each other and they have developed an intrinsic goal to finish the series. I'm so excited that they're so excited to read. I want to keep this love for reading going!
