Read! Baby, Read!

Help me give my students KinderMat seating and a refreshed library. I want to make reading an activity they look forward to with comfortable, flexible classroom seating and a collection of books with youthful characters that reflect them.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

KVP is a tuition-free, public charter elementary school in Southeast Atlanta. We serve 530 scholars in grades Kindergarten through fourth grade with a population that is 97% African American and 3% Hispanic. 97% of our scholars qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Each grade level is based on an age-appropriate value (Love, Teamwork, Honor, Excellence, Leadership) that helps build character skills and prepares them for the grade to come. At KVP, the path to and through college begins in kindergarten! We believe that all children are created with a unique purpose and charge to do great things. We are committed to creating a warm and nurturing environment that cultivates learning and excellence in not only our scholars but their families as well.

My Project

Many of my scholars read at a level two grade levels behind their current grade. Therefore, "free reading" or reading for leisure is an activity they struggle to find joy in.

I want to create a space where they want to read!

The KinderMats will provide my scholars with flexible, comfortable seating options to break down the formal feeling of reading at a desk. The range of books I have selected also feature African-American characters of similar ages to my scholars.

Having books with characters that represent my scholars and a fun place to sit will create this space.
