My students need to fall in love with great books. I carefully, handpicked some of the best series and graphic novels to entice even my most reluctant readers.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have the incredibly important job of moving my students two grade levels in one year. Luckily, my students are up to my job and theirs! I just need to keep reading materials in their hands. By getting the newest, juiciest, and best books in the classroom, I keep their interest levels high!
My students are the definition of high needs.
In our school, 25% of our students are homeless and 80% receive free/reduced lunch. My students come from a variety of backgrounds. Some have grown up in the same traditionally African-American neighborhood as their grandparents, and haven't ventured much further than our city limits. Others are first or second generation, Spanish speaking, immigrants to our country. With our wide cultural range, we spend much of our time learning about each other and the characters we read in our texts. There's so much to share and learn just among ourselves.
My Project
As a Literacy teacher, my biggest struggle is getting students to simply pick out a book. There's always a litany of excuses why certain books won't work. My hope is by having some of the newest and most exciting Young Adult Fiction series my students will fall in love with characters and read not only 1 book but 3 or 7. The series selected include some of the most anticipated sequels and volumes of all times. From "The Hunger Games" to "Divergent," even Hollywood has jumped on the series bandwagon to entice young readers into the movie theater.
It only takes one book for a child to fall in love with reading.
Upon falling in love with books, my students will grow to be lifelong readers. Series allow students to fall in love with multiple books and characters they've seen grow and develop and truly form a bond with.
