My students need extra support. Students at this school are hardworking learners. They may come from homes that are struggling. More than three-fourths of them are on free or reduced-price lunch, but that doesn’t stop them from wanting an education. The students are multiracial, including 40% White, 31% Hispanic, 23% Black, 3% Asian, and 3% multi-race. This creates an environment of acceptance and tolerance for all. My challenge is to level the playing field so that students with fewer opportunities are able to compete academically with those who have more opportunities.
Creating learning experiences for these students is the best part of my job; the joy on their faces as they are discovering something new and integrating knowledge into their “personal toolkits” is priceless.
In my learning environment, I endeavor to set them up to win in an environment that is inviting and comfortable. Sometimes, that means school supplies, mending clothing, a band-aid or a kind word. I believe this will not only help the students focus, but will also produce a higher level of work from the student. Teaching these young learners is a privilege.
My Project
As a media specialist, it is my job to encourage students to read. To promote reading to our 3rd through 5th graders, Brevard County Schools do a yearly challenge of our Sunshine State Young Reader Award Books. These are 15 books chosen by Florida Media Specialists every year. The students read these books, and then at the end of the school year, they get to compete with other schools doing activities about the books.
I would love for my students to be a part of this competition.
Because we are a title-1 school, funding for these books is hard to come by. By having extra sets of these SSYRA books, more students will be able to be involved in this program. As an extra incentive, any student that reads these books and receives a test score of 80 or above also earn brag tags that they can proudly wear around campus.
Please help support our students and our media center. These books will not only help students this year but will be available in our library for years to come. I would love to be able to have these books for students to enjoy reading once we are able to go back to school.
