My students need books that they can relate to, get lost in, and to discover new worlds. They need new books that can give them an outlet for their teenage angst. These include the Vampire Academy Box Set, by Richelle Mead, "Food, Girls, and Other Things I Can't Have" and "Flipped."

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember when you were a teenager and someone told you do something? Do you remember doing the exact opposite because it was "cool" or you were trying to prove a point? My students do this all of the time, especially when it comes to reading. It's because they haven't found the right book!
In a middle school of 2000 students, my 95 don't stand out.
The majority of my students are Hispanic, second language learners, and receive free/reduced lunch. When my students walk out of school, they are immersed with Spanish speaking families and friends. English takes a back seat. So many of my students wish that their parents could read with them, but the harsh reality of it is that they don't.
My students want to be able to find books that they can relate to, or learn something from, however, without the opportunity at home, they rely on me to help them find new and exciting books. My seventh and eighth graders just want to feel welcomed by books, and are tired of not being able to find one that fits who they are as people.
My Project
Imagine growing up in a world where your daily life consists of seeing the people around you, whether they are family, peers, or strangers, be consumed by their job or drugs or even violence. Imagine waking up everyday only to find out that another person in your life is walking out on you, or yet another child is being born into your already overcrowded life. Imagine walking into your school, and not having the supplies you needed to get a solid education. Well you have just entered my students lives.
If my students were able to have these books to read, they would be able to walk into school everyday being able to look forward to seeing a fresh library with books that invite them into magical worlds or worlds that are just like theirs. If my students had these books, they could walk out of school knowing that they are going home with a book to read instead of seeing another kid get jumped. If my students had these books, their worlds would change and their minds would expand.
Please provide my students with the opportunity of finding out how much a book could change their lives.
With your donation, my students will stop fighting against the urge to want to look "cool" when they see books that are cool. If my students have the opportunity to see a world that is different from theirs, it will inspire them to strive for more. Maybe, if they read a book that emulates their life, they can reassess themselves in a way they never thought to before. Please give them the chance.
