My Students

Do you remember the first book you read on your own? I do, and I am not sure I will ever forget it! My students are on their way to becoming readers and need a variety of leveled books to help them on their literacy journeys! They need books that will capture their imaginations!

My students are educationally at-risk.

They come from home environments that most of us could never imagine and books are a luxury that most of their families can not afford. My first graders come from an inner city community in New Jersey and receive free or reduced lunch. They count on our school to bridge the gap and provide many of the things they need. What makes them like you and me is that they love to learn! For them, books are like gold and they can't get enough!

My Project

These materials, which include an abundance of books and several different reading levels, will forever change the lives of my first grade students! They will provide opportunities for my students to escape and will surely capture their imaginations! With these leveled libraries, I will be able to better meet the needs of students at various learning levels. I will be able to teach them specific comprehension skills and provide exemplary instruction while using authentic literature. These books will provide opportunities for my students to truly become engaged in the reading process - they will not only be able to step into the lives of the story characters, but they will also be able to gain knowledge through the high quality nonfiction texts as well. With this variety of books, my students will certainly become 'book connoisseurs'.

This project is important to me because it will provide materials to better help me reach my emergent readers.

This variety of books will certainly draw my students in and encourage them to read. Your donations will make such a huge difference in their lives! They will have opportunities to read books they might not otherwise encounter. Instead of being turned off by reading, my first graders will likely look forward to coming to school so they can make their way through our new library!
