Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a TK-2 special education teacher with 11 students with intellectual disabilities who participate in the moderate/severe alternative curriculum. My class is the sole special education program at our school dedicated to students with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities on the alternative curriculum. My students are extremely active, and their attention spans last no longer than ten to fifteen minutes per activity. My students have many needs from basic daily life-skills (e.g. diapering) to exposure to age appropriate standards based curriculum.

My school is a Title I school that serves students who come from low-income families and all qualify for the free or reduced-price lunch program.

My students need to be highly motivated by a variety of resources to capture their attention and develop their individual strengths. My students are eager learners and come to school excited for the day. They are amazing little human beings who will become important contributors to society with the appropriate support and resources.

My Project

The materials I am requesting for my students will help them access literature that reflects their diverse abilities and families. I will use the books to talk about different abilities and families, guiding students in comparing their experiences with the ones from the literature. It is important for our library to reflect the different equipment and support they receive. It is also important for our library to reflect the different families that exist in their lives. I will use manipulatives to cultivate interest in hands on activities and learning through play. I hope to create a library and play area that reflects my students and their diverse needs and families. My goal is for my students to feel welcomed and comfortable in their classroom environment. It is important for them to learn about their diversity and acceptance.
