My Students

I teach in a small, urban school with a diverse population. It is composed of two hundred and sixty students in grades PreK- Grade 4. My students come from low socio-economic backgrounds, which all qualify for free school breakfast and lunch. Forty percent of the school community come from homes where English is not the primary language spoken.

My Project

These books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. My classroom library is a place that my students really enjoy-I read aloud to them, and they read independently! All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind-they are books to help my students contribute to creating a safer and more equitable place for everyone.

Though we still have room to grow, it's wonderful to see the range and variety of mixed-race families that appear in contemporary picture books.

More and more, we're seeing that multiracial families and mixed-race characters are being featured in books that aren't about racial identity or family makeup.

The best way to increase multiracial understanding is to read a host of high quality literature, discuss them in a safe setting, and then read them again. With these new books, my students will be exposed to rich literature encompassing inclusion, difference and sameness. They will also be able to discuss the themes in these books as a group. These books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading and be more understanding members of our community. This project will only help enrich their experiences.
