This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are unique as they are in this school for their second chance (sometimes third or fourth). They have been long term suspended or expelled from their home base school. Most of these students take this second chance seriously.
I want to give my students every opportunity to succeed.
Sometimes this may take the shape of relevant novels, supplies for organization or headphones for read aloud differentiation. Being an alternative school, funds are often limited and I am reliant on the kindness of strangers.
My Project
Many of my students are below grade level reading and sometimes being read to while following along in a physical book is quite helpful. With these headphones, students can read along at their own pace versus as a whole class. Rather than stumbling along new words, students will hear correct pronunciation read to them. Their vocabularies will grow twofold!
Differentiation is key to many students' success.
These headphones will allow read aloud differentiation to those who require it, as well as, those who simply will benefit from the extra support. As I mentioned, the headphones will increase students' vocabularies and therefore, increase their reading confidence encouraging more reading. This will in turn raise their reading level. Mission accomplished!
