I am the proud teacher of 32 of the most perseverant, bright, hard-working students you can imagine. My students are talented, intelligent, creative, and inventive. They all have dyslexia, which makes their daily school and overall academic life extremely difficult, especially for those with the most severe forms of dyslexia.
While some of the academic tasks like copying from the board, reading the questions on a test, or the instructions in their daily class assignments might be easy for most students, for my students, such tasks are quite challenging.
However, they work hard to keep up with the school work, and never use dyslexia as an excuse to slack off. They are determined and put their hearts into everything they do. With some accommodations like help from teacher and peers to read their assignments, books, and tests, they always get their work done. I am often told by classroom teachers how they wish all of their other students had the attitude my students have. What can I say? My students are amazing.
My Project
Book selection is especially tricky for students with dyslexia. If the book is at grade level, it might be too difficult to decode for them. On the other hand, they can decode a book that is below grade level, but the content of the book might be uninteresting, or below their intellectual or cognitive needs. Students with dyslexia, more than anyone, benefit from listening and following along audiobooks.
Audiobooks are the most effective way to help dyslexic students develop vocabulary and build their fluency and sight word recognition.
Students who struggle with reading require a lot more motivation to read independently. They need books that appeal to their interests and intellectual needs, without them having to worry about the book's level of difficulty.
The books that I requested would add some more choices to our audiobook library. Each kit includes five sets of 4 books and a CD, which is perfect for my listening center. With more than 30 students coming from grades 1 through 6, I need books for a broader range of reading levels and interests. Please help me provide my students with the tools they need to succeed in reaching their reading goals.
