(Read-)Along Our Way to Loving Literacy Centers!

My Students

The students I have the pleasure to teach are some of the most passionate, sweetest, exuberant kids you will ever meet! Many of them are also students who have faced many hardships in life and will continue to face many hardships. Our school is a Title I school serving low-income students from all over the city of Nashville, TN. Many students come to our school without ever having been in a Pre-K program of any type. Therefore, some of them are often lacking in skills that perhaps their same-aged, higher income peers have already mastered. Our school is determined to make sure that by the time our students leave our school in 8th grade, they are caught up and on the path to college success. College and life success depends on creating students who are life-long learners and lovers of gaining knowledge!

I truly hope that in my school all of my students feel the excitement that comes from gaining knowledge and discovering something new every day!

My Project

Adding to our school's technology and listening center's equipment and books on CD will continue to enhance the literacy focus within my classroom. I currently have a classroom library filled with books for students to explore. Allowing them to listen to these books during the day will only increase their love for reading and their learning of different literacy skills. My students will learn how to orient a book, follow along with the words, expand their vocabulary, gain confidence, use critical thinking skills and so much more.

Reading is a powerful tool that allows these children to learn about different topics and have fun with their peers!

The listening center will be available during our Literacy Centers and free choice time for students. They will have the freedom to choose books that interest them and learn from them. I have found that this is one of the greatest ways to enhance their reading ability and urges them to read more. The additional exposure to these books will assist my students in growing stronger in reading and literacy.
