Remember when you read words, sentences, and books all by yourself? Remember your pride when you shared your story with your parents? What if your parents could not understand you?
I teach 40 kindergarten students who are learning English.
Most speak Spanish as a first language and live with parents who do not speak or read English. Our school is a large, urban, public school where a majority of students are economically disadvantaged.
My Project
As we begin to read, I search for materials which are high interest and have vivid pictures, a perfect description for Scholastic News' "Let's Find Out." This news magazine is aimed at kindergarten students and comes in English and Spanish editions. We will read the English edition together in class and send home both the English and Spanish editions so parents can read at home with their children. The great articles in "Let's Find Out" will be a talking springboard for children to share what they are learning.
Many of these students come from homes with nothing to read.
Children need to read with their parents. This project will put a great resource in the hands of parents and children every week for a whole school year! Start these kindergarten students off on the right reading track with their English and Spanish Scholastic News.
