Help me give my students Scholastic News! It inspires a love for reading and learning in every second grader. We look at science, social studies and social development from a kid’s perspective—making the topics relevant and exciting!
These students that we have this year have never had a "normal" school year.
Kindergarten was abruptly interrupted by COVID-19 causing them spend the last quarter of school at home.
Once August rolled around, some chose to do first grade from home while others came in-person full time. A handful chose to do a "blended" model where they did both: in-person and virtual. All of a sudden, second grade is upon them.
Let me tell you. Second grade is fun. Seven and eight year olds LOVE learning about real-life things. We'll be reading a fiction book and we'll make a connection to something in real life and go off into a tangent researching about it. They LOVE reading about real-life things and I want to give them as many opportunities as possible.
My Project
Scholastic News and Science Spin will ignite student interests in current events and science topics. These texts will be in the hands of each and every student.
Each student will be able to read articles independently or use the digital access to have the articles read to them.
They'll have access to differentiated texts as well as text that's in Spanish. Teachers will also be able to use these articles in guided-reading groups. Students can look for text-evidence and
expand vocabulary with each week's article.
With some students missing parts of kindergarten and/or first grade, second grade is playing some catch up!
