Read All About It!

Help me give my students novels that they can use for novel study and classroom library books that are diverse.

This project expired on May 18, 2022.

My Students

My students are creative, thoughtful, full of questions and have a love for reading. They look forward to teacher read aloud time because they love to listen to me read books to them. They love making inferencing about what is going to happen next in the story. They also love relating characters and experiences to their life. I often have to ask my students to put books away and focus on what we are doing as a class.

Many students in my classroom come in saying they have difficulty completing assignments and reading at home because of lack of supplies and resources.

Our school is a Title 1 school in Utah. Many students come from one parent homes and have many struggles. They are very resilient and determined. They are truly an incredible group, and I am so lucky and thankful to have a new group of learners that are excited and ready to learn each year!

My Project

I have been doing the LETRS training which has taught me about the importance of reading. I teach 5th grade and I typically focus on reading comprehension, but if they don't understand the words that what they are reading they cannot comprehend it. After doing LETRS and also seeing all the gaps my students have from COVID, I have realized the need to read more books so that they can increase their vocabulary and comprehension. In LETRS I have also learned that a great way to increase vocabulary and background knowledge is through reading diverse books.

My students need more opportunities to read novels and diverse books.

I believe that all my students should feel confident reading. They need more access to books that will enrich their vocabulary and help them continue to make growth.
