This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a Middle School special education teacher, teaching 6th grade math and science to students with autism and other disabilities. I teach students in an underserved community, in a Title I school with limited resources.
My special education students have a variety of struggles that they must overcome every day, inside and outside of school.
It is difficult for many of my students to stay on task and engaged throughout their lessons every day. I do my best to address their individual needs in order for them to be successful. And in order to do this, I would like to provide them with access to age-appropriate, content related readings and activities.
My Project
Middle school math and science classes delve deep into complex topics that can be difficult for many students to understand. Relatability is so important, especially for students with special needs.
My students love to ask me "what does this have to do with real life?!" Scholastic Magazines and Time For Kids help us answer this question!
The monthly Math and Science magazines highlight age-appropriate current events that directly align with the grade-level Common Core Standards that we are learning in those classes. The articles are written in a way that is accessible for my students. They are also accompanied with practice activities that my students find engaging, without feeling like they are working hard or being assessed. Even students who claim they hate reading, have expressed interest in reading these magazines in their free time.
These magazines, available in print and online, are an extremely useful tool to use while working with my students. We would love to have current magazines! The digital versions can be accessed by students from school and from home, no matter where we are learning from this school year.
