Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello! I teach in a high needs school in Washington Heights in Manhattan. Last year I taught a first grade inclusion classroom where half of my students were special education and the other half are regular education. However, this coming school year I will be teaching a 12:1:1 class, for special education students who require a smaller setting. My kids have a great attitude and really are a lot of fun, they really bring a lot of joy to my life.

Unfortunately this year New York City suffered from numerous budget cuts. Due to this fact, Teacher's Choice money (money we can use for our classrooms) was cut drastically. I now have very little money to spend on supplies/materials for my classroom, which is unfortunate because the students are the ones who are suffering the most due to lack of supplies.

I recently began reading the SkippyJon Jones series to my students and they fell in love with the books from the very first page. I have never seen my students so excited for a particular book or character before. They sat eagerly awaiting "book of the week" time because they knew I was going to read more from the SkippyJon Jones series. As I read, my students became part of the book as if they had walked through the closet with SkippyJon Jones into his next adventure. It was amazing to see them so excited and engaged in books. I am requesting a set of these books to have in my classroom to get students excited about literature. Additionally, my students primarily come from Hispanic backgrounds and these books promote Spanish culture and use some Spanish language which is really exciting for the kids and it helps them see themselves in stories and bridge the gap between their home and school community. I am also requesting several math literature books. Math is not just numbers anymore, we need to incorporate literature and respond to math stories and situations. This helps students make since of the information and also gets them used to communicating their mathematical thoughts.

We really need your help! With your help I can give my students the supplies that they need and deserve. These supplies will really help me differentiate for my students and help them be successful in their academic journeys.
