My Students
Do you remember getting your first magazine? Magazines are a great way to expose students to current events and science related topics. It also provides students with engaging and interesting material to practice reading skills.
I am a first grade teacher at a Title I school in a high needs community in Illinois.
The majority of my students (95%) live at or below the poverty level. They a attend a neighborhood school that has been making steady gains in reading and math.
Unfortunately, it still lacks basic, current and engaging non-fiction reading materials for social studies and science. Funding cuts have greatly reduced our basic classroom supplies and our community has limited resources to spend on extra materials, such as Scholastic News Magazine.
My Project
My students need 28 subscriptions to current, high interest and engaging non-fiction reading materials. They need Scholastic News Magazines for social studies and science! These magazines will promote reading in my class room and at home. They provide science and social studies enrichment reading activities that promote a deeper understanding of complex issues. Students also look forward to receiving their subscription and eagerly share their magazines at home. This is often the first magazine or book that many of my students own. This helps support reading at home and builds better readers.
These magazines will impact my students' reading abilities and their connection to current events.
Scholastic News provides my students with additional reading opportunities and allows them to explore a variety of topics. They allow students to build an awareness of their community and the world they live in.
