This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As 8th graders, my students are getting ready to forge into high school and become more independent learners. I would like to give them the tools and experiences necessary to be ready for the learning that is ahead for them.

I have 103 unique and amazing students who come from different backgrounds and have very different learning needs--they all love to be read to; however, many of them are not interested in reading on their own!

One thing that brings them all together is their love of stories and their creative nature. Our diversity allows us to learn not only from the curriculum but from each other, making every experience and every day a learning opportunity. Once they get to high school, these young adults will be expected to read on their own. If I provide them with enough rich opportunities and a variety of stories to read, their fluency will continue to increase, therefore affording them more opportunity for success as independent learners.

My Project

Since the first day of school, I have proudly told my students that I am a self-proclaimed reading geek. I am obsessed with books and am committed to the notion that all it takes is one good book to spark an interest in reading in even the most reluctant readers. I am hoping to add some new books to our already extensive classroom library. Many of the titles currently on the shelves of Room 205 have been well-loved, and with so many new titles available in adolescent literature, it's time to add some new friends.

These high-interest books will inspire my reluctant readers to become independent readers, which will result in greater achievement in all classes.

Research supports that reading is the best way to increase vocabulary and comprehension skills.

I have a common practice of sharing my favorite books with my students, and they are hungry for more!
