My Students

Curling up and reading a good book is not only one of the best simple pleasures in life-- it's also one of the most effective ways to get better at reading.

Learning how to read is a key foundational skill that sets children up for success.

Everyday my students participate in the Daily 5 reading program. This means they practice by reading to themselves, reading with someone, listening to reading, working on words (phonics & spelling), and working on writing. One of their very favorite parts is getting to choose ten to twelve books that they are interested in reading and are just right for their reading level each week. They keep these special books in their book box and practice reading them over and over. It's amazing how letting the students take ownership of what they read impacts their motivation to become better readers.

My Project

My students need to choose books that they are interested in reading and are at the correct reading level, such as Why Do Dogs Bark?, Come Here, Tiger!, and The Princess and the Pea. These books will be added to our classroom library. The students choose from this library weekly when they fill their book box with ten to twelve just right books. Each child will receive one of the white cardboard book boxes to keep his or her special books in each week. Having an individual book box increases time on task and eliminates students meandering to and from the classroom library during reading time.

These books will be especially helpful in our classroom library because we are short on high interest level one and level two books for students to chose from.

Lots of just right reading practice helps students develop confidence and a love of reading.
