I work in an urban district in Kalamazoo, MI with a diverse set of students. Working closely with the English teacher on my interdisciplinary team, we collaborate to boost student choice in reading at all times. When we are not working on cross-curricular projects, I am also supporting independent and small group reading projects for our shared set of students.
Our students need newer high-interest books in our classroom libraries.
When we offer times for reading, we want students to choose texts that are not only interesting but appealing to them from the point of view of many topics, genres, and subject matters.
My Project
In order to create a reading community in our building, we have to put books in students' hands. The best way to do this is to promote libraries in all forms: the public library in our community, the central library in our building, and the classroom libraries that our students spend most of their time around. Books should be everywhere! While building a classroom library is a goal, the other obstacle to tackle is to put books that kids want in their hands. This involves updating our classroom libraries to include more current texts. These are texts that reflect our students' faces, voices, thoughts, and feelings. Kids should see themselves in print.
Your donation will help update math, science, English, and social studies classrooms with current young adult and middle-grade fiction and graphic novels.
Four classrooms will receive the books from this project as we are all connected on an interdisciplinary team. Our team fully believes that kids need books no matter what subject area they are studying.
Thank you packages are sure to have amazing pictures of students #caughtreading and #bookworming.
