Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students are like other kids in many ways. What sets them apart from other students is their economic status. Our school is 99% free lunch, and many of the students are newly-arrived immigrants. Our school also serves kids from several homeless shelters and drug rehab facilities.
Our students do not have the financial security many other kids do, yet they have the desire to learn and improve.
They deserve the same level of education as their wealthier peers receive.
My Project
The standardized tests our students take rely heavily on nonfiction articles and magazine-style writing. Our students generally do not read news magazines, or other nonfiction articles. Many of the textbooks we use contain more works of fiction than nonfiction.
In order to expose our students to nonfiction writing styles and teach them about current events, we need classroom magazines.
Scholastic magazines present interesting articles that focus on current events, and come with a variety of teaching resources. Our school does not have the budget for Scholastic magazines, yet adding it to the curriculum will improve student reading and create well-rounded students.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
