As a reading Interventionist, I work with struggling readers. Each day, I work to challenge students to want to read. I stress the importance of building strong literacy skills, so students can make their dreams a reality. Many of our students face daunting economic and personal challenges, they recognize they need to improve their reading skills. They enjoy interesting texts they can read independently or with little support.
We are a Title I school serving an urban, high poverty population.
Many parents work a number of jobs to support their families. My students are often responsible for caring for younger siblings, including preparing meals and getting them ready for school. My school is a Title I school serving a large ELL population and all students receive free breakfast and lunch. Yet, these same students come to school with positive attitudes, ready to learn.
Due to these circumstances, my students rely on the school and public library for interesting and engaging reading materials. In spite of these personal challenges, these students come to school each day looking for stimulating and challenging learning opportunities. Our struggling readers need access to engaging reading materials to help them become lifelong learners.
My Project
Action magazine will enhance the scripted reading program I use with my struggling readers. The wide range of literary and informative articles will allow students to practice reading skills. Additionally, my students will have the opportunity to read interesting, engaging text.
Students will be able to read articles that interest them.
These magazines will provide student choice and more authentic reading opportunities for my students.
Since there is an online component students can also use newly acquired reading skills away from school. Based on previous experience, I am confident my students will appreciate reading Action Magazine, both in hard copy and online.
