Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

On my quest to better understand bullying, I have uncovered the reality that many of my students have no background knowledge of the civil rights movement. Most students have heard of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. But the struggle that gripped the nation is unknown to them.

Beyond statistics, each student at our school has many challenges.

Though diverse backgrounds are represented, gangs, abuse, drugs, and illegal immigration are common undercurrents in many homes. Poverty is rampant. When asked at the beginning of the year how many students owned books at home, only a smattering of hands raised. When asked how many families owned multiple televisions, every hand waved with pride. Many of our students have given up on the printed page and seek to find information from their uninformed peers and quick soundbites delivered between "reality" television shows.

My Project

These award winning books will be the foundation of a unit on understanding the civil rights movement. Students will first read several picture books in a small group setting. They will be searching for main ideas that they want to know more about. Next, students will chose a book for further exploration of an important figure or landmark victory along the path towards change. Ultimately, students will produce a newspaper article that explains the important information of the topic they have chosen to research.

Not to sound cliche, but I do have a dream.

A dream where the community feels responsible to ensure quality education for all students. A dream where each person in a learning environment is free to safely explore her or his unique gifts and talents. Please help me to fulfill this dream.
