Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
When you walk into our school you see smiling faces of students who are eager to learn, share, and grow. Our students are creative, hardworking, and fun-loving. However, many of the students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. About half of our students come from multilingual households and receive free and reduced-price lunch. They may not have access to books, resources, and stories like other students in their school and district. This leaves some of the students relying heavily on their classrooms and teachers to provide a safe place stocked with books and materials to discuss, learn, and grow.
Despite these challenges, our students love to read, they love to dance and sing, they love technology, and they love lots of positive attention.
As teachers at our school, we try to focus on the positive impacts we can make in their lives. Although we have no power over what happens outside of school, we can help provide a safe environment where students realize their full potential each day. Every single student has the ability to make a change not only in their own lives now, but also make a positive change in our society!
My Project
Our classroom is surrounded by literature and words all day. We begin our day from the first minute the bell rings with morning writing. Then we analyze a sentence together, dive into close reading, and share thoughts during writing workshop. Later in the day we meet in small groups to develop our word concepts and strengthen reading skills. We close our day by conducting an interactive whole class read aloud. During our small group time students will break apart words, find word patterns, identify prefixes, suffixes, and root words, and more. Right now I only have enough magnetic letters for about half of one small reading group to work at a time. I would like another set of magnetic letters so that students can do their own work without sharing the materials with others.
Women's history month is a special month where we can read about and highlight amazing women role models.
I want to use the Who Was ... series to teach about female leaders during the month of march. Each student will be paired up and assigned a women to read about and research. They will then read the Who Was... book together and present what they learned about their given female. This project will meet our reading, writing, and speaking and listening standards as well as provide a fun opportunity to learn about important female figures.
