My Students
Do you remember learning to play an instrument in school? You may not remember how much it costs to play and maintain that instrument! Along with the cost of instruments comes the cost of other necessary supplies such as reeds for woodwinds, music stands and the equipment to store and transport them
Many of my students have never had the opportunity to play an instrument.
Some have never attended a wind ensemble or orchestra concert, even though we are located within walking distance of 2 colleges with stellar music programs! Some can't even identify instruments other than guitars, electric bass's or drum kits. I not only want to educate my students about music and the variety of musical styles that are out there, I also want to give them the experience of participating in a concert band.
My students come from a variety of cultural and economic backgrounds. Many must work jobs to help their families pay the rent or help support younger siblings. All students will be using school purchased instruments as they cannot afford a rental fee. These instruments are not playable without reeds! A beginning band student can go through 1-2 reeds per month, sometimes more! This isn't an expense I can pass along to the students, so we need your help!
My Project
We need reeds to make our instruments play! Without reeds, the instruments are useless. We also need a transportation cart to help us move our music stands from our rehearsal space to performance space. This not only makes transporting the stands easier, it also helps clean up our classroom. Stands can get neatly stacked at the end of each class, and the stand cart has a footprint of about 5'x2' so it takes up very little room. Stands that are not stacked on a cart can take up 2-3 times as much space and are much harder to move!
My students deserve the opportunity to learn an instrument since this option would not be available to them outside of school.
My students are very used to having to give things up or be unable to participate due to financial constraints. I want to give them every opportunity to learn an instrument without any financial strings attached.
