Read a Book, Learn about Refugees, Share Immigrant Stories

My students need 16 copies of the book "Home of the Brave" by Katherine Applegate.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Goldenberg's classroom raised $154

This project is fully funded

I work in a public school in an urban setting, and currently serve students in grades K through 8 in small group ESOL classes. My students have various cultural, linguistic, social, and educational backgrounds, and I always encourage them to share their experience in class. It makes the discussions very enriching and motivating for all the participants.

In the Middle School ESOL class we are currently working on the unit discussing cultural diversity, the sense of belonging, immigration, and fostering tolerance to different cultures in America. I am looking for a novel that English Language Learners in grades 6-8 would be able to read, and would be motivated to respond to, with scaffolded activities and thought-provoking meaningful discussions.

The textbooks provide a challenging selection of stories, essays, and poetry to discuss in the classroom, but I would like to extend the class activities and allow my students to start building their own collection of good books that they would be able to revisit and share with friends and family. I am always on the lookout for inspiring books for teen readers, using the suggested reading lists on Teaching Tolerance and colorincolorado websites. When I read the book "Home of the Brave" by Katherine Applegate, I realized that it is the perfect way to extend the discussion of immigration, refugee experience, and the journey from being a clueless newcomer to being accepted in the new culture. I would like my students to have a chance to read the book, discuss it, share their own immigrant stories and reflect upon the difficulties they faced when they first arrived in the USA and tried to become a part of American culture.

At the end of the unit, I would like my students to keep these books in their home libraries, and, hopefully, start a tradition of getting one book for them each school year. Your support of this project will help in motivating students to read, make personal connections with literature, and encourage students to reflect on the universal challenges that immigrants face.
