What books transported you and inspired creativity as a child? What would your life have been like without those important books? I teach fourth grade at an elementary school in a high poverty community where food takes precedence over new books.
My students are creative and hard working, but our school's limited resources are needed to pay for basic needs that other communities do not need to provide. They are interested in learning through authentic reading experiences, not just in out-dated textbooks.
That is why I am asking for your support by providing some class sets of classic novels for my avid readers. Though some schools can ask students to buy books for their class, these economic times make this impossible for our school community. We will use these novels to learn about literary genres and help students develop critical thinking skills. If the students learn to love reading more, then the best possible goal has been reached.
By helping us buy these books, you are helping even the playing field for my students. When you give a child a book, you give them the ability to see worlds they may never travel to and dream dreams that they may never have thought possible. Thank you for your consideration and help!
