My Students

Our school serves students grades 7 through 12 and is located one block from city hall. These students from many areas of the city are identified when they experience difficulty, allowing the focus to be on intervention rather than remediation.

For the most at-risk students, those with habitual truancy, significant behavior issues, and histories of suspension and expulsion, the goal at the school is to change behavior so that these students will stay in school and earn enough credits to graduate.

My Project

In our library students come to read quietly. The English teacher, the Art teacher & I would like to create some media literacy lessons for students.

We have selected a variety of books, most about African American history, culture & real people.

Our students will be able to select a topic or theme that appeals to them. Then each student will have time in the library to read, research & discuss their selected books. Students can choose to make a poster "book talk" or create a literary concept map. Students will share book talks & concept maps with classmates. Then we will post these media literacy projects in the library!
