My Students

My students are the future scientists, problem solvers, and inventors who will someday make our lives better. They come from a range of backgrounds and economic situations, from low to lower-middle class. They are as varied as flowers in a field, and have shown me that they are motivated to go beyond the average curriculum.

The common denominator in this group would have to be their enthusiasm for learning and love of new challenges, especially in science.

I love to take them down information paths that stimulate their curiosity and answer their questions. Almost daily, someone comes up with a question that causes me to stop and think, and often, I am compelled to do reading on my own to better understand the inquiry myself. These kids have made me a better teacher and learner, and they deserve all of the tools necessary for them to go above and beyond in their understanding of how this world works.

My Project

I am asking for twelve Pyrex Glass 600ml Griffin Beakers, twelve Pyrex Glass 250ml Griffin Beakers, a Carolina Chemonstrations: Luminol Light-Up Kit, and a Whoosh Bottle. If my project is funded, my students will then have the opportunity to use real science equipment to experiment with various chemical combinations. They'll be able to discover exothermic vs. endothermic reactions, solutions vs. mixtures, chemical vs. physical reactions, and other things, such as growing crystals and using chromatography as a means of identifying unknown compounds.

In the past, I have mostly just done demonstrations, but I feel my students need to have the chance to discover the magic for themselves.

Even though I enjoy doing demonstrations for them, there is no better way to learn than to experience science yourself. All children deserve to have this opportunity. Thank you.
