My students come from low-income families, and the majority are English as Second Language learners. They don't have the opportunities to play team sports outside of school, where they get the exercise they need. Most of them don't even play outside for safety reasons, so their overall health is lacking.
It is crucial that we give our students the opportunity to understand and feel what it is like to exercise in a healthy target zone.
This is a skill that needs to be taught to develop life-long healthy habits and to improve their overall health.
These heart rate senors will be used to teach my students the importance of exercising in their targeted heart rate zone and develop habits that will last a lifetime. My students will get to wear the monitors during class and be able to self reflect and adjust their performance to be able to stay in the "Green Zone", the healthy exercise zone. They can also see if they are putting forth the effort in class.
Having heart rate monitors is a cool way to integrate technology into the gym and it is the first step in developing life long healthy habits.
