Do you remember your first school experience? Perhaps you have just sent your own little one off to pre-k? Nothing makes me smile more than thinking about those fun and engaging classrooms filled with excited little learners.
I have the joy of working with an exuberant, energetic group of pre-kindergarten students in urban Title I schools.
As a special educator, I support several inclusion classrooms so all students with a variety of needs are able to learn together. Each day is an exciting adventure for our little learners!
In addition to my work in classrooms, I also have the pleasure of working with the early learning teachers of our district through writing and facilitating professional development. I am able to share the skills and strategies I have found to be effective with my own students, and help other teachers learn and implement these tools. This gives me the opportunity to shape classrooms across the district and ensure all students have access to high-quality classrooms.
I first made the decision to pursue National Board for Professional Teachers Certification in the area of Early Childhood Generalist because I wanted to ensure I was maximizing my impact on my students. I believe that as professionals, we must continually challenge ourselves and develop ourselves as practitioners. The National Board Certification process pushes teachers to meet the highest teaching standards through their 5 Core Propositions for Teaching.
This process was absolutely the most challenging experience of my 25 year teaching career, but was also by far the most rewarding!
It requires one to be reflective, and through that reflection, I learned so much about myself and my practice. I have since left my classroom and am in a position in which I have the privilege of supporting and coaching other early childhood teachers throughout my district. It is now time for me to renew my certification, and I look forward to the opportunity to reflect on my teaching and coaching experience thus far, and consider how I can continue to maximum the impact that I have not only on students, but on other teaching professionals.
