Were you one of those students that had trouble with math? Maybe you just didn't enjoy it or you just got bored with the same old worksheets day after day after day. My class of special education students would benefit from using technology to become engaged and work together cooperatively.
Students in my classroom are part of a lower economic community.
Many students come from a nearby Native American reservation. Most of the students take advantage of the free or reduced breakfast and lunch program. Their families are struggling financially and sometimes lack things such as books and supplies that their children need to succeed. Additionally, my students are part of the special education program. They all have a learning disability which impacts their abilities in reading writing and math. They are all completely capable of succeeding in school and going on to college one day, but they just need to be taught in a different way than their general education peers.
My Project
My students struggle with learning in general, and sitting in a classroom just listening to someone lecturing is not helping. They need to be engaged in the material they are studying and need to see it presented in multiple ways. This year, I am incorporating more projects into my class. In order to do some of these projects, we need a laptop that has video and graphics capabilities. My students can create videos and posters that show off their learning in a way that they cannot on a multiple choice assessment.
My students all have a learning disability.
Things that are easy for typical children are a greater challenge for my students. Integrating technology and hands-on projects into my curriculum allows my students to learn and express themselves in many ways and allows them to finally feel success in school.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
